More customer-oriented approach.
By and large, the domestic side of the Bank's
operations progressed favourably in 1985, both
in terms of results and our share of the various
markets, such as credits and securities business.
A strong position in the home market is of
importance in relation to our activities abroad,
and if only for this reason we shall strive to
maintain the upward trend in the years ahead.
This will not, of course, be an easy task. Not
only is competition among those already in the
market increasing, but with the liberalization of
have the necessary technical facilities at their
disposal.
As far as the first is concerned, close attention is
paid to the training of ABN employees. In 1985,
5809 attended in-housc courses. As regards
technical facilities, automation plays an
important role in the area of communication,
and clients are also kept up to date by means of
brochures, etc. "ABN Bank Nieuws" and
"Agrarisch Bank Nieuws", which are published
periodically and distributed to small and
medium-sized companies and to the farming
community respectively, are successful
examples.
Last but not least in this context, a great deal of
attention is devoted to the development of new
products. Examples include, in the private
sphere, the Capital Account and ten- and
fifteen-year fixed interest home loan schemes,
and in the business sphere, cash management
and consultancy in mergers.

governing the structure of the financial sector
being relaxed, a steady stream of new
competitors may be anticipated. On the other
hand, deregulation will create fresh
opportunities for the banking industry; and the
economic situation, to judge by the forecasts for
1986 and for the medium term, certainly need
not preclude further growth.
The constant improvement of services plays a
central role in the Bank's policy, and various
methods are employed to this end. It
is vital that our products should be
matched to the specific requirements
of our customers; our services must
above all be customer-oriented. This, 0^!!.--
however, requires that our staff have
the knowledge to provide advice on a
wide range of matters; they must also
